I wish to express my deep thanks to the people of Sierra Vista who have supported the Buena High School wrestling team through this wonderful year.
I would like to relate to you the toughness of our kids.
Wrestling is a tough, aggressive sport that teaches lessons in life that young folks will be able to carry with them in the defense of their country if need be.
It is common for some folks to criticize the efforts of high school aged youngsters, questioning their morality, courage and values. These criticisms couldn’t be farther from the truth.
At this point in the season we have a number of young men who are performing on sheer guts. Lesser athletes would have dropped from the arena, but these young people will not. They will struggle to represent their school and their community with every drop of courage in their body and souls.
Thank you, Sierra Vista. We will do our best to represent you.

Madden, the No. 4 seed at 127 pounds, gave the Colts their highest state meet finish since Dan Southard became head coach at Buena six years ago.
The Buena junior wound up in second place after losing to the No. 2 seed, Richard Palencia of Maryvale, 15-1 in the finals at Jobing.com Arena.
Madden, who went all out in beating the No. 1 seed, Ryan Miller of Corona del Sol Friday in the semifinals by a fall, found the going pretty rough against Palencia, who entered the tournament with a 25-3 record and was 29-3 when he met Madden.
“He was really tough and strong,” Madden said. “He was good at countering every move I made.”
Madden finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and for the season was 29-6.
Dotson opened the Class 1A/2A tournament with a pair of wins Friday that put him in the 154 pound semifinals against Yuma Catholic’s Alyosha Sandigo Saturday morning.
Sandigo entered the tournament with a 50-3 record and held on for a 4-1 win over Dotson that dropped the Yellowjacket wrestler into the consolation bracket where he defeated Antelope’s Curtis Fowler for the second time in the meet, 13-7, putting him in the match for third and fourth place.
But going up against Willcox’ Irving Quezada was a rematch of the regional final at Benson last week where Quezada beat Dotson, 17-6, in the championship finals.
Saturday’s match was much the same, except that Dotson, who was trailing 14-3, put a cradle move on Quezada with five seconds to go in the match and almost had him pinned before time ran out.
Buena had the only other medalist, that being Emilio Gonzales at 147 pounds.
Gonzales, the No. 3 seed in his weight class, came back in the consolation round Friday evening with a 3-2 win over Mountain View’s Preston Ferrin that put him in the medal round where he lost to Westwood’s Jake Dodge, 5-2, to finish sixth.
Corona del Sol and Red Mountain were battling for first and second place in the 5A, Division I, with Mesa High in third and Dobson, Mesa Mountain View and Highland trying to crack the top five.
Buena finished in 18th place with 55 points.
“Since we didn’t score any points in Saturday’s medal round we probably won’t make it into the team championships next week,” Southard said. Casa Grande will finish ahead of us and probably get the No. 15 or No. 16 berth.”
Sunnyside was running away with the 5A, Division II and had a 90-point lead going into the medal round where they had eight wrestlers going for first and second. Cibola will finish second with Kofa and Ironwood Ridge battling for third.

The upset put a dent in Corona’s team title chase, but it still sits in first place with 176 points and three finalists in Derek Felton (152) and the undefeated duo of Luke Macchiaroli (215) and Trevor Stapp (HVY).
Brent Madden today qualified for the the State Championship match at 125 pounds. He did it in dramatic fashion–He pinned the #1 Ranked defending state champion. More to come…
After a heartbreaking loss in Thursday’s preliminary round, Emilio Gonzales bounced back with a 3-2 win in the consolation quarter finals. Gonzales lost his next match 8-6. He will be competing for 5th place on Saturday.
UPDATE:
Story from the SV Herald:
Madden, the No. 4 seed in his weight class, was down 5-1 with time running down when he caught Corona del Sol’s Ryan Miller, the No.1 seed, in a standing cradle and wound up pinning him with 29 seconds remaining in the match.
“I think it’s great,” Madden said. “I was nervous going up against the No. 1 seed who had a 39-2 record entering the tournament. But it just goes to show you that anyone can beat anyone on any given day. I guess this was my day”
Madden is going to meet the No. 2 seed, Richard Palencia of Maryvale in the finals.
Teammate Emilio Gonzales made it to the medal round after beating Mountain View’s Preston Ferrin, 3-2, in the consolation round, but lost to Brophy’s Clint Norton, 8-6, in the consolation semifinals that sent him into today’s medal round for fifth and sixth place.
The two wins kept Buena in line for a spot in the 16-team tournament that will be held next weekend.
“We are in 13th place right now and could possibly reach 12th place with a couple of wins tomorrow,” Buena coach Dan Southard said after Friday’s competition.
Published on Sunday, February 03, 2008

Marana Mountain View was second with 135 followed by Ironwood Ridge with 126 and Rincon with 28.
“It feels great,” Buena coach Dan Southard said. “I knew we could do it with a good effort and I knew that Salpointe Catholic and Casa Grande wouldn’t be far behind.”
Buena won only four of the 14 weight classes and finished second in six others.
“We did get a better than average effort from all of our wrestlers,” Southard said. “Several of them went against No. 1 seeds and despite losing, went all out in their effort.”
Brent Madden, at 127 pounds, had the best day on the mat, winning both his bouts by falls. Madden pinned Salpointe’s Ramon Garcia in 1:15 and Tucson’s Lucas Moriada in 32 seconds to take first place.
Right behind Madden was Bryan Sieler at 173 pounds who won the gold medal after pinning Jacob Eubanks of Salpointe in 1:21 and Wes Ashby of Casa Grande in 2:50.
Marcus Williams (114) and Emilio Gonzales (147) were Buena’s other two winners.
Williams opened with a 16-3 win over Christian Pinter of Casa Grande and won the championship with a fall in 3:25 over Angel Burr of Tucson.
Gonzales pinned Tucson’s Eric Hayes in 1:04 of the first round and won the gold with a 9-4 decision over Brandon DeAnda of Salpointe.
All four Buena winners were seeded No. 1 in their weight class.
Placing second for the Colts was freshman Marcus Owens, who moved to the No. 2 seed when Casa Grande’s No. 2 seed was scratched.
Owens, in only his second varsity outing, held on with the No. 1 seed, Frank DiGiorno from Tucson before getting pinned with only 55 second remaining in the bout.
Also placing second was Rene Miramontes, the No. 2 seed at 121.
Miramontes edged Tucson’s Gabriel Castro, 1-0, in the first round, then fell to No. 1 Eryck Garcia of Salpointe, 7-5 in the championship bout.
Ian Beauregard, the No. 1 seed at 132, defeated Salpointe’s Guillermo Islas by a fall in 1:36 in the first round, then lost a 9-4 decision to the No. 2 seed, Chris Garza of Casa Grande.
David Jones at 162, was seeded second in his weight class and came from behind to pin Salpointe’s Cody Dahms in 4:54 in the opening round, but faced No. 1 seeded John McCaslin of Casa Grande in the finals and lost by a fall in 3:05.
Another No. 2 seed, Kevin Treftz at 191 opened with a pin of Tucson’s Bravlio Gonzalez in 1:30, but had a hard time in losing to Casa Grande’s No. 1 seed, David Montijo, by a Fall kin 2:56.
Heavyweight Robert Ellis, who injured his knee in last week’s Salpointe Invitational, still received the No. 1 seed and drew a bye in the first round. Ellis then went against Salpointe’s Luis Martinez, the No. 2 seed, where after the first period coach Southard threw in the towel fearing additional injury to Ellis knee, leaving Ellis with second place.
Third place went to Jimmy Byrd at 142 pounds.
Byrd lost to the No. 2 seed, Dick Prather of Salpointe, 14-9, in the first round and took third place by virtue of a bye.
Also placing third was Carl Larimer at 154 pounds.
Larimer, the No. 3 seed, lost his opening bout to Casa Grande’s David Ide by a fall in 4:28, but came back in the consolation finals for third and fourth place to pin Tucson’s Cody Moorhead in 36 seconds.
Buena’s other third place came from 217-pound Anthony Kirkpatrick.
Kirkpatrick was the No. 3 seed and after losing to Alex Barcelo of Salpointe by a fall in the opening round, took third place like Byrd did, on a bye.
Placing fourth was freshman Brice Madden at 137 pounds.
The young Madden lost his opener to No. 2-seeded Albert Sy of Salpointe by a fall in 2:15, then was pinned by Tucson’s Waylon Martin in 3:45 in the consolation finals.
“We couldn’t have done much better,” Southard said. “I didn’t want to take a chance with Ellis re-injuring his knee and since we had the tournament won, elected to pull him.”
All four Division I teams will compete at the Individual Championships that start Thursday at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix. The division II teams will open their Individual Championships at Deer Valley High School, also on Thursday.

The Buena High School junior is a wrestler on the Colt junior varsity wrestling team and has been an inspiration for his teammates throughout the years.

Jarboe started wrestling in the sixth grade at Apache Middle School and wrestled as a freshman at Buena. He sat out his sophomore year and returned this year as a junior.
“I plan on wrestling again next year,” Jarboe said.
This year Jarboe competed in five junior varsity matches.
“I like the physical contact,” Jarboe said. “I can feel my opponent and I know where his extremities are and I know the moves to get him to the mat.”
In practice, Jarboe wrestles against David Strebe from the junior varsity team, as well as varsity wrestlers Jimmy Byrd and Michael Bergstrom.
“Strebe is a very good friend and probably the most helpful,” Jarboe said. “He works with me on technique. My favorite move is the fireman’s carry and the Peterson.”
“He’s a inspiration for everyone on the team,” Southard said. “Everyone wants to help and teach him. He’s improved over 100 percent since he starting wrestling with us. He really concentrates on his technique.”
In addition to wrestling, Jarboe is involved in an all-around academic and extra-criculum program at Buena High School.
He plays trumpet in the Buena Jazz Band and is in the Concert Choir. He also hold the role of secretary for all the various Buena Choirs.
With his wrestling, band and choir, Jarboe still maintains between a 3.0 and 4.0 GPA in academics, taking, among others, World History, Algebra and English.
What spare time is left in his busy schedule, Jarboe finds listening to Country and Western music relaxing and also plays ping pong with his friends and family members.
“I also like trains — the real ones,” Jarboe said.
Jarboe has set his goals on attending a trade school in Phoenix, where he would like to learn street and road construction
While Jarboe has completed his season as a wrestler, the Buena varsity team continues to compete as the season winds down.
Buena, along with 20 other teams, will compete in the Salpointe Catholic Invitational this weekend in Tucson. It will be the last competition of the regular season for the Colts before hosting the Class 5A Division I and II Regionals on Feb. 2. After that it’s the state individual and team tournaments the following weeks.
“We are hoping for a top five finish,” Southard said. “There are some very good teams entered and it could be very close.”
Salpointe coach Tim Brown looks for a close battle for the team championship between Buena, Pueblo, Ironwood Ridge, Cienega and Deer Valley.
Other teams who will field strong teams include Amphi, Canyon del Oro, Desert Ridge, Westwood and host Salpointe.
Other teams entered include Cholla, Desert View, Douglas, Marana, Mountain Pointe, Nogales, Palo Verde, Sabino, Saguaro, Sahuaro and Santa Rita.
Southard has entered Marcus Owens (105), Marcus Williams (114), Rene Miramontes (121), Brent Madden (127), Ian Beauregard (132), Brice Madden (137), Jimmy Byrd (142), Emilio Gonzales (147), Carl Larimer (154), David Jones (162), Bryan Sieler (173), Kevin Treftz (191), Anthony Kirkpatrick (217) and Robert Ellis (Hwt.)
Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. Friday and will run all day. Saturday’s session starts at 9 a.m. with the championship medal round scheduled for 5 p.m.
“We will start the championship earlier if we are well ahead of time,” Brown said.
A concession stand will be available.
Cost is $5 for each session or $10 for all three sessions.

“We scored more points against them (Sunnyside) than any other team they faced this year,” Southard said. “Our wrestlers competed very hard and we had some very close matches.”
Southard juggled his lineup somewhat for the featured contest.
Picking up wins for Buena were Marcus Williams at 114, who defeated the Peoria Invitational champion, John Ackers, 11-10; Emilio Gonzales, who dropped down a weight class to 147, pinned last year’s state champion, Andre Alcazar in 3:12; Anthony Kirkpatrick pinned Luis Acuna in 2:48 at 217 pounds and Robert Ellis took a 3-1 overtime win from Tucker Nabors at heavyweight.
Other Buena wrestlers competing, but losing to their Blue Devil opponent were: Rene Miramontes by a fall to state champion Paul Garza at 121; Alex Watson by a fall to John Garza, also a state champion, at 127; Ian Beauregard 17-5 to Steve Moreno, another state champion, 17-5; Brent Madden 13-1 to Cody DeBerry at 137; Jimmy Byrd by a fall to Isal Gomez at 142; Mike Bergstrom by a fall to Issa Mohamond at 154; David Jones, 11-2 to Steve Extract at 162; Bryan Sieler by a fall to Ray Pina at 173 and Kevin Treftz by a fall to John Ochoa at 191.
The loss dropped the Colts to 15-1 on the season with only next week’s double dual at Douglas against the Bulldogs and Nogales Apaches and the Salpointe Invitational remaining on the schedule before regionals at Buena on Feb. 2.

As the New England Patriots just celebrated their perfect regular season, the Colts are having a wonderful year — one that should be recognized in Sierra Vista and Southern Arizona.
This type of season comes with a lot of hard work. It also probably comes with a bit of good luck, as any sports season with a good team does.
We want to express our pride — for the community — in the achievement of these young men on individual and team levels.
Keep up the good effort, and we hope you find success in the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs.

Jones then put a reverse on Kempton and with five seconds to play, put the Bobcat on his back for a three-point nearfall that gave Jones a 10-7 win and Buena the match, 30-29.
“I knew all the pressure was on me and I gave it all I had,” Jones said. “He was running out of gas and I got the reverse on him, then got him on his back with the Peterson in the last five seconds.”
Buena defeated Sahuarita by one point in their final match of pool play on Saturday at the Marana Duals.
“This is getting to me,” Buena coach Dan Southard said. “I knew our schedule was getting tougher and the toughness continues next week against Sunnyside and Rio Rico.”
How close was this contest? One bout went into four overtimes, one bout was won on a fall in 4:59.6 and five bouts were decided by three points or less.
Bryan Sieler got the Colts out to a good start, winning by a fall in 47 seconds over Larry Casinell at 173 pounds.
Kevin Treftz won by forfeit at 191 and Anthony Kirkpatrick brought the crowd of over 200 spectators to their feet with a pin of Cody York in 4:59.6 that gave Buena an 18-0 lead.
Heavyweight Robert Ellis lost a close 4-3 decision and Kyle Rae lost 8-3 as the Bobcats cut the lead to 18-6.
Another thrilling bout took place at the 114 pound weight class when Buena’s Marcus Williams went against the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the state of Arizona at 114 pounds, Trace Gutknecht.
Williams trailed Gutknecht 0-2 after the first period and 3-2 after the second period, but came through to tie the bout at 5-5 late on the third period and won it with a takedown in the last few seconds.
“I knew he was really good and that he was ranked,” Williams said. “He was a little tired and I held on to win with a takedown in the last few seconds.”
Buena then lost the next three bouts to fall behind, 23-21, before Jimmy Byrd took his 142-pound bout into four overtimes before getting an escape as time ran out to win 3-2 over Andrew Roche that gave Buena a 24-23 lead.
The Colts then lost the next bout by a fall to trail 29-24 before Emilio Gonzales won a close 7-6 bout over Ryan May at 154, that closed the gap to 29-27, setting the stage for Jones’ final bout.
The win improved Buena’s record to 15-0 in dual meets heading into next week’s matches with No. 1 ranked Sunnyside and Rio Rico. Cienega fell to 15-3.
Junior Varsity
The Buena junior varsity team lost for the first time this season, 56-33 to the Cienega JVs.
Buena won six of the 16 contested matches in where some wrestlers wrestle twice in order to give as many wrestlers from both teams mat time.
Picking up wins for the young Colts were Ariel Campas by a fall at 119; Alex Watson, 8-4, at 119; David Strebe by a fall at 125, Michael Bergstrom by a fall at 145 and Andrew Cook, twice, both by falls at 189.

Buena earned team first place by defeating Marana 49-24, Sahuarita 34-33, Estrella Foothills, 56-27; Millennium, 46-24; Valley Vista, 70-6; and Catalina Foothills, 69-12 in dual meet competition at the Marana duals.
Nine wrestlers earned births to the individual tournament.
First Place: Marcus Williams, Emilio Gonzalez
Second Place: Kevin Treftz, Brett Madden, Ian Beauregard, Rene Miramontes, and Robert Ellis
Congrats to the Buena Wrestling team for clinching the 1st place trophy bringing it home to Buena’s trophy case.
First place in individuals went to Emilio Gonzalez, Brent Madden and Marcus Williams.
Second Place went to Rene Miramontes and Ian Beauregard.
Third went to Kevin Treftz.
ALSO a huge accomplishment went to Brent Madden who received MVW (most valuable wrestler) for the lightweights.
Congrats to all the guys on this fantastic win!!
The Buena Colts have made it big.

The Colt boys came back stronger and prouder than ever. Taking sixth out of 48 schools did more than just lift there spirits.
Honorable mention goes to some extraordinary guys on the team.
First off to Rene Miramontes, for working his way in to the finals and bringing home a second place metal.
To Emilio Gonzalez and Marcus Williams for their dedication and bringing home fourth place metals.
Though these three guys did excellent, everyone else did an outstanding job as well.
As for the match of the weekend I give that to Brent Madden who pinned his monster of an opponent with only 16 seconds left on the clock. I will be trying to convince his dad to put the match on to the web site so everyone can see.
All in all these guys blew the other teams out of the water. CONGRATS!
